Frequently asked questions about skincare and our products

What if I have sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis or challenging skin?

The HBB range is particularly suited to all of these skin conditions as the products are made from simple, natural ingredients including honey for its extraordinary soothing ,anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

The particular product that we would recommend for dry, sore, itchy skin or skin prone to eczema is our award winning ‘Nurse Bee Universal Balm’. This is loaded with beeswax, honey and calendula oil along with lavender and mandarin pure essential oils. The most effective application of the product is to rub a little between your hands then apply over the affected area at night: the beeswax will sit on the skin creating a natural, breathable barrier preventing moisture loss whilst the active ingredients will soothe and moisturise the skin - the longer the product can stay on the skin for, the more effective the result.

For sensitive skin we would recommend our Sensitive Bee skincare range which is free from fragrance and essential oils, made with simple natural ingredients including raw honey and pure beeswax for a gentle yet effective skincare regime to suit delicate skin types.

I have dry/rosacea prone skin on my face, which products would work for me?

For dry, mature or rosacea prone skin we would recommend our 'Bumble Bee' skincare range.  The hydrating properties of our Bumble Bee face care range which icludes our rose geranium and myrrh Bumble Bee Face Cream is our best seller.  It is a soft, silky cream rich with honey and beeswax to hydrate and protect the skin. It can be used as a very effective day cream.

For overnight restorative skincare we would recommend the Bumble Bee Face Oil. Completely cleanse the face and apply a few drops of the oil by gently tapping and smoothing into the face. This oil is loaded with skin-quenching plant oils such as avocado and rosehip to provide an intense moisture boost over night for super soft skin come the morning. It is ideal for assisting cell regeneration and for calming inflammatory conditions of the face, particularly beneficial for skins prone to rosacea.  This range marries well with our Baby Bee Honey Soap which is perfect for your gentle morning cleanse.

What about sun protection?

The single most powerful and effective anti-ageing product is a good natural broad spectrum sun protector. You should always finish your morning face care routine with a broad spectrum natural sun screen which will immediately delay further ageing to your skin from sunlight, environmental aggressors and bluelight. Our Busy Bee Face Oil contains raspberry seed oil which may provide some natural protection against the UVB rays which cause burning. We always use this on our faces during the summer for extra protection.

What products should I use for oily skin and skin prone to breaks outs or acne?

We would recommend trying our 'Busy Bee' face care range.   It is extremely important to foster a daily face care regime to keep the surface of the skin clean without drying it out.  This range includes our face oil which is particularly good for open pores that easily become congested or blocked.  Even though it may sound counter intuitive, natural face oils are molecularly small so will soak straight into your dermal layers without causing pore blockage. They are light and do not leave a tacky feel to the skin.

We would also recommend using a weekly natural facial exfoliator such as our very popular 'Queen Bee Face Scrub'. This gently buffs off the top layer of grime and dead skin cells, moisturises the skin, leaving it super soft, bright and glowing.

We also recommend our  'Rescue Bee Roll On Remedy' to tackle any outbreaks. Another tip: if you experience an acne breakout, try applying a layer of raw honey to your face for 20 minutes 2-3 times a week as a naturally soothing anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial face mask.

What shampoo would you recommend for my hair?

We have two styles of shampoos. The first is our original 'soap' style shampoo bars and the second is our newer 'non-soap' pH friendly shampoo bars.

For normal to dry hair we recommend our Queen Bee with rose, orange & patchouli  (our most popular shampoo bar)

For normal to oily & dandruff prone hair we offer our Glossy Bee bar with lavender, rosemary & tea tree.

For sensitive scalps we have our Gentle Bee which is also a conditioner and has lavender & chamomile or our fragrance free Sensitive Bee soap style shampoo.

We do make starter sizes of all of the shampoos so you can try them all out before deciding which one suits yours hair and scalp best.

Do you have a product for puffiness, dark circles or sensitive dry skin around my eyes?

Our 'Queen Bee Under Eye Serum' is made up of a blend of oils which have natural anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing properties such as rice bran. The product contains no essential oils so is extremely gentle making it ideal for dealing with a multitude of eyes problems including dry skin, puffiness, dark circles and fine lines. The cooling rollerball applicator also de-puffs the skin naturally.

Frequently asked questions about honey & bees

What is raw honey?

Raw honey is honey straight from the hive which means that it has not been pasteurised or micro filtered. Normal supermarket honey is like orange juice in that it is a syrup blend from Europe/China which is highly processed to improve the shelf life. Honey which is heated and micro processed takes out the valuable pollen, vitamins, enzymes and unique single apiary flavours.

What is the difference between runny and set honey?

All honey comes out of the hive runny but will form into crystals over time or when cold. The time period in which crystallisation takes place can also depend on what nectar the bees have been feasting on. Crystallisation is completely natural and the honey is still completely safe to eat and HAS NOT gone off. If you wish to return crystallised honey to runny honey simply heat it (taking the lid off first) on a very low setting in the microwave or over a saucepan of water.

Why are honeys different colours?

This depends on what nectar the bees have brought into the hive. Generally 'Spring' honey is darker and stronger tasting being full of tree pollens, dandelions and nature's spring flowers compared with 'Summer' honey which is much lighter and more floral being full of meadow flowers, clovers and bramble.

Can honey help with hayfever?

Raw spring honey produced within 3 miles of where you live is the most effective for this. If you regularly eat your local spring honey which contains the pollens to which you are allergic, the theory is that your body accustomises to the pollens gradually to prevent a sudden reaction.

Isn't Manuka Honey best?

Manuka honey is made from nectar from the Manuka plant which grows in New Zealand. The Manuka nectar has very high antiseptic properties. However, Cardiff University performed a study the year before last of honey across Wales and found honey in North Wales demonstrated with exactly the same properties. This goes to show that local, raw honey is just as powerful; plus by buying local you are supporting the sustainability of bees and beekeeping in Wales and the UK.

Why are the bees in trouble?

Bees are in trouble due to a number of factors. The seasonal changes mean that there is not a sustained summer season for blossoms and nectar to allow the bees to effectively gather enough food stores for winter which can lead to starvation. The prevalence of diseases means that colonies can be completely wiped out. However, the most pressing of issues currently is the high use of pesticides with Europe currently engaged in research into this issue as we speak. Consider before you use chemicals outside and the effect that these have on wildlife.

Why are honey and beeswax so good for the skin?

Honey and beeswax are what’s known as 'humectants', meaning they attract moisture and lock it in - perfect for skin hydration and skin barrier support. Beeswax acts as a natural, breathable barrier to prevent moisture loss and to protect from harsh weather, heating and environmental pollutants.

What is the special healing power of honey?

Honey is highly anti-bacterial so is extremely healing – great for sensitive, dry and damaged skin. Also beneficial for wounds, stings, bites, infections and sore throats. The best treatment for a sore throat is to eat a pure teaspoon just before bed to totally coat the throat and let it work its magic overnight. You can even use raw honey as a calming, detoxing face mask – apply a layer to the face, leave for 20 minutes and wash off for soothed, healed and cleansed skin.
